A route to shape around your client
This Iceland south-coast self-drive uses two nights near Vík and two near Skaftafell instead of racing along Route 1. The structure gives waterfalls, coastal scenery and glacier landscapes their own days, with a full return day before the international departure.
The outline allows 6 nights, including arrival and departure planning. Keep the sequence, extend a favourite base or change the balance of activity and downtime. This is an illustrative FIT journey for travel agents; accommodation, transport and experiences are selected for the final brief.
A flexible starting point
A summer road journey with no highland driving. The return from the Skaftafell area to Reykjavík takes most of a day with breaks. Check road conditions daily, respect beach warnings and use qualified guides for glacier activities.

Hotel examples
Hotel Kría, Vík
A modern hotel beside Route 1 in Vík, allowing two nights in the village instead of a long return drive from Reykjavík.
Activity examples
Waterfall stops on the south coast — choose a small number of visits and allow for paths, weather and rest breaks.
Skaftafell and the glacier region — select a marked walk or a separately booked guided glacier activity suited to the clients.

Day 2
Waterfalls to Vík
Drive east towards Vík, choosing a small number of waterfall stops along the way. Allowing time for the approach paths, lunch and changing weather makes this a full day of discovery rather than a series of rushed arrivals. Overnight: Vík area.

Day 3
The Vík coast
Explore the coast around Vík, choosing viewpoints and paths that are open on the day. The sea is part of the landscape rather than a swimming stop; local beach warnings and closures determine where it is appropriate to walk. Overnight: same base.

Day 4
Towards Skaftafell
Continue east towards Skaftafell with time for breaks along the route. If conditions allow, a short marked walk gives a first impression of the glacier landscape before settling into your accommodation for two nights. Overnight: Skaftafell area.

Day 5
Glacier country
Dedicate the day to one glacier experience, such as a guided activity or time around the glacier lagoon. Choosing a single main outing leaves room to enjoy the landscape and adapt to the conditions without rushing between appointments. Overnight: same base.

Day 6
A proper return day
Set aside the day for the drive back to Reykjavík, breaking the journey with regular pauses. Without fixed sightseeing appointments, you can respond to weather and road conditions and arrive ready for a final evening in the capital. Overnight: Reykjavík.
